    Hello,
I am at a loss and am hoping for some insight regarding my knee. I have been running since I was 12 years old (30 now)…about 9 years ago, I dislocated my (left) kneecap and sprained my knee in a ridiculous waitressing accident (I should really make up a better story). I was in a brace for about 4 months and went through a few months of PT before I was back in working order. Since then, my knee has always bothered me, sometimes more than others, but it has never been anything I couldn’t run through. I have taken Glucosamine in years past, hoping to protect my joints and possibly decrease the pain in my knee…and it has worked…but I have not taken it regularly for at least the past year. I am currently training for my 7th marathon (about halfway there) and started taking Glucosamine tablets again, hoping to thwart off anything that might be lurking in the knee pain department. The past week or so, I have noticed a marked increase in pain in my knee and I’m not sure why…I wonder if it could have anything to do with the Glucosamine I am taking?? I’ve never been a huge fan of supplements and such, but this was recommended to me by an old coach.

About 2 months ago, we moved and my new running routes are much more hilly than my old ones…my new home is also a 2 story home as opposed to my old one, so I am using the stairs much more often. The pain I feel seems to be inside my knee…and it feels like if it could just pop, it would be fine, but it doesn’t. It hurts when I’m using the stairs, and on and off during a run. This past weekend during a 10 mile run, it didn’t really bother me too much during the run, but afterwards and into that night (I ran in the early morning), it was swollen and hurt to bend it completely. I iced it and took some Ibuprofen…it was fine the next day until I hit the stairs again. Consistently though, it’s a pain that feels like the knee just really needs to pop…sometimes it feels like my knee is going to buckle if I step wrong…this is what it has always felt like. I wondered if the Glucosamine could be impacting it as it works to rebuild cartilage in my knee?? Anyone know if this is possible or if I’m just crazy??
I appreciate any input or suggestions
    Thanks!!!

My wife had a very similar experience. We switched brands of glucosamine, got new shoes, gave it a rest with some cross training and it feels a lot better. This is actually our second experience with a “bad” batch of glucosamine. Since the supplement market is not regulated it will occur occasionally.
The other factors you mention – more hills, stairs also put more strain on your knees and with a previous dislocation there will have been some trauma to the cartilage which will make it more sensitive to higher loads.
Swelling has a strong inhibitory response on the quad muscles which will often cause that sense of buckling.
With a previous dislocation and current knee pain I would also supplement your training with core strengthening especially of the hip abductors (muscles on the side of your hip).
Check out the DVD A Balanced Solution for some ideas.
    Best

While this topic can be very touchy for most people, my thought is that there has to be a middle or common ground that we all can find. I do treasure that you’ve added relevant and intelligent commentary here though. Thank you!
